Tennis elbow is a very frustrating injury and can be very stubborn to get rid of. When you find out about a strain or an injury the first thing you want to find out is how to prevent further injury so you can heal the injury. However, the internet is full of misguided information which isn't great to follow! Below I have listed 3 mistakes that can occur when you are trying to eliminate tennis elbow.
Treatment Mistake 1 - Using a Brace, Splints or Tape
People make the mistake of using a brace or splinting to support the elbow thinking that it will help your injury heal faster. By using a brace you do have the advantage of relieving your pain but unfortunately this comes at the expense of hindering the healing process.
The brace being so bulky immobilizes your arm and prevents the mobility and range of motion which goes on to interfere with the healing process by allowing adhesive scar tissue to form and prolong the recovery time.
Treatment Mistake 2 - Misunderstanding The Inflammation
You need to understand that inflammation is part of the healing process. We are told to use anti-inflammatory drugs to suppress the inflammation but these drugs have no ability to heal your injury. Instead they just slow and prolong your tennis elbow injury.
Treatment Mistake 3 - Opting For Cortisone Shots
This is the most critical mistake that many sufferers make when trying to eliminate tennis elbow. This method is invasive and very painful and unfortunately can end up having a slow muscle and tendon healing process and tendon weakening making it very difficult to get the damaged elbow muscles and tendons back to normal.
